THEFT OF BONDS PROVED
i REMANDED FOR SENTENCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Feb. 11. After a. retirement of three and ahalf hours a jury in the Supreme Court to-day returned a verdict of guilty with 1 a strong recommendation of mercy in the case in "which Victor Alfred Smith was eh a r ire d with the theft, of thirteen Wdllington City Council debentures. the property of the executor of the estate of the late Martin Byrne. Smith, who conducted! liis own. defence, contended th© "bonds were given him as a. gift from Byrne. _ He alleged his solicitor had informed him tliat the i gift was a valid one and that he had a good title' as against that of the executor of the estate. In announcing the verdict the foreman said Smith took an honest action in consulting his solicitor and afterwards fell. He was remanded for sentence.
