OKAIAWA

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. (Kroni Our Own Correspondent.) The usual monthly meeting of the School Committee, held on Friday night, was attended by Messrs J. C. Barclay (chairman), L. Houlahan. (secretary). A. Christiansen, J. A. Shearer. C. S. Martin, W. G\ Williams. M. Carr and the headmaster (Mr C. E. Evetts). The headmaster in his report stated: Attendance: The school reopened with, a roll number of 71 boys and 90 girls. Thirteen pupils were withdrawn and 18 new pupils admitted, making a total of 161 on the roll as against 156 at the end of last year. Staff: Miss Black left, at the end of the year, having completed her term of probationary assistant. Miss Wytkin has been appointed probationary assistant for the coming year. Miss P. York left to take up her studies at the Auckland Training College. Dental Clinic: The clinic has reopened at Mtuiaia. It will be necessary to make provision lor conveying pupils to tlio clinic for treatment. There are 36 pupils to be treated. It was resolved to forward letters of appreciation to Miss Black and Miss York for the excellent work done while on the staff of the school. ' it was also decided to make arrangements with ear owners similar to last" year for conveyance of pupils to the Manain dental clinic. Letters were received from the Education Board in connection with the cutting down of subsidy* payments, also giving details of work which can be subsidised under the unemployment scheme. The matter of having the fallmg-m square and paths retarred under the unemployment scheme was left in the hands of the chairman, with power to act. A number of small accounts were missed for payment. The members themselves are responsible for the raising of funds, most of which are obtained by the carrying out of small functions at the school and any small donations the children care to give. The members of the branch are already showing in a practical manner their sympathy with the earthquake sufferers. A donation of £2 2s has alreadv been sent through the Hawera -nmmittee.
