EARTHQUAKE RELIEF.

At a meeting called by the Normanby Town Board last night, to consider raising funds for relief of the sufferers in the earthquake disaster there was a large attendance. Tlie chairman of the board, Mr. B. T. Peach, addressed tlie meeting and need all to do their utmost to help with funds or gifts of clothing or foodstuffs, at this critical time. It was unanimously decided to open a subscription list in the town board’s office, and to appoint the clerk to receive any donations of clothes, etc., to be forwarded to the sufferers. ilr. Peach announced that he had conferred with his board members, and it was decided to head the subscription liist with £lO from the Town Board. A further effort to raise funds is to be made at a euchre party on Tuesday 17. Prizes are to be canvassed for and at the meeting Mr. AY. Palmer announced his intention of donating a 501 b bag of Hour as a prize. Further donations were received from Air. J. Forbes £2O and Mr. E. J. Harrison £l. Hughes at Normanby, or at the board’s office on AVednesday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. HORTICULTUR AL SOCIETY. A meeting of the Normanby. Horticultural Society was held last night, following the earthquake relief meetno- A record crowd was present. Mr. T. J. Allan, president, drew attention to the fact that never for many ears had tso many attended a .-How meeting, and stated that it augured well for the success of the society when enthusiasm ran so high. Prior to the business of the meeting Air. Alhan made feeling reference to die death of the late Air. llios. Robson one of the founders of the society, 48 years ago. He regretted exceedingly that Mr. Robson had not lived to see the jubilee show. . Members expressed their sympathy u -n.h the bereaved relations by stunning in silence. , . , , Air. Allan also moved a hearty vote of sympathy wit-li the sufferers in the earthquake' stricken area, and regretted that the society was unfortunately unable to assist by a donation, but there was not the slightest doubt, he said that the individual members would all bear their share in assisting these afflicted. . , , Mrs G B. Stoddart was appointed bulge of the Highland dancing events at The show. , ~~. It was decided to hold, athletic events, such as javelin throwing, high jump, etc., for ladies. n ~ On the motion of Airs. Archbold it was unanimously agreed that no entries ho received alter the steward s books are issued on the Tuesday evenno- prior to the show. Exhibitors are to”be notified that with the exception ,1 cooking, cut flowers and decorative sections exhibits must be forwarded for staging on Tuesday evening prior to the show. . . Working bees are to be held on the Monday and Tuesday before the show. All 'primary school children are to be admitted free to the show both m the afternoon and evening.
SCHOOL PICNIC. An informal meeting: of the Norninn11V School Committee was held 'last night and after discussion it was decided that as all arrangements foi the school picnic had been made, and a special train arranged it was not advisable to cancel the picnic.
