The Minister of Education, Hon. H. Atmore, recognising that boys and girls are, in the present economic conditions, finding unusual difficulty in securing employment on leaving school, has decided/ as a temporary measure, to extend for an additional year the junior free places of those pupils in secondary schools, district high schools, and technical high and technical day schools who failed at the end of 1930 to secure a senior free place either by recommendation or by examination. Not a few young men who find it impossible to gain employment at present are solving the cost of living difficulty in a simple novel, and healthy way, says the Auckland ‘‘Star.” Either they or their friends own small sailing craft, and now some of these little vessels are being put to uses both economical and pleasurable, Several of the mullet boat typo may be found round the Hauraki Gulf, with their crews of two. three, or more living the simple life. A line overboard provides the flesh for most of the meals, though a gun ashore may also contribute to the pot. The primus stove does the cooking, and a call at some outport replenishes from time to time the bread m?Jy. Otoe small sailing party, who are awaiting for some weeks till certain work eventuates, frankly gave the information that they could live well and happily afloat under these conditions at a cost of about 7s 6d per week each, assuredly a much smaller amount than would be required for a more restricted life ashore.
