WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The formation meeting of the Patea Women’s Institute was held on Mon- ( day in the Borough Council Chambers. The Mayoress (Mrs Ramsbottom) introduced Miss A. Stopes to these present. Miss Stopes, of England, who has been in Now Zealand for a year organising and forming Women's Institutes, gave n very interesting address. She also had a most educative exhibition of work done by members of the Women’s Institutes in the Homeland These articles were greatly admired and showed the wonderful way in which these members had been taught and trained by the Women’s Institute. The band-made leather gloves called for a great deal of | praise, whilst a sample of the quiltmade by various women’s institutes in England and presented to our Queen was the centre of admiration. Slippers. hand-made lace, hand-embroider-ed linens, silk-embroidered flower pictures and various other samples of work all came in for their meed of praise. Miss Stopes explained how lecturers in these "different and varied arts travelled throughout the Dominion. and lessons could be had in almost any art or craft. One of the main objects of the institute is expressed in the . motto: “Tf you know a good thing, nass it on.” At the close" of Miss Stopes’ address those ladies present decided to form an institute in Paten and the following officers were elected: President, Mrs F. Ramsbottom; secretary. Mrs Smiles; committee. Mesdames Drummond. A. Carey, Jenkins and Armstrong. It was decided to hold monthly meetings on the second Thursday in the month. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Miss Stopes for assisting the formation of an institute in Paten and for giving such an instructive and appreciated address. WATERSIDERS’ PICNIC.

An enjoyable day was spent at Patea Domain yesterday by waters ideas from Wanganui. New Plymouth and Patea. despite considerable rain. Special trains arrived from north and south laden with passengers, _ young and old. Races, cricket, music and sports of all kinds were enjoyed and competitors in all cases were numer-

ous. . . A heartv welcome was given by tine Mayor, Mr F. Ramsbottom, who said it was good to see so large a gathering on the pretty domain. The chairman of the Domain Board. Mr E F Hemingway, also added a few words of welcome, emphasising the value of the bequest from the Hunter Shaw estate. An acknowledgment in happy terms was made by Mr J. Roberts,- -secretary of the Federation of AVatersitiers. The success of the gathering wa-s largely due to the efficient work dmdav of the capable secretaries Messrs S. Flood (New Plymouth) and Robertson (Wanganui), and the chairmen. Messrs AY. Falconer (New Plymouth) and Dwyer (Wanganui). The organisation for controlling the pro gramme and the distribution of tea, milk. etc., was very good. After the dancing and slapping competitions there was dancing and cornmuni tv singing in the big shed. the Parilialca team, "led by Te Atua Taukoi. crave some hakas.
