esjpyrigut. j Received 12.30 p.m. to-day. SYDNEY, Jan. 10. There was an unexpectedly dramatic development in the Federal political situation when a special meeting of the State Australian Labour Party executive decided to serve an ultimatum on Federal members representing New South Wales constituencies that they must advocate a straightout policy of inflation.
Representatives of the State Labour movement at a conference of the New South Wales section of the Federal Parliamentary Labour Party to be held on Monday were instructed to advise members that there must be no compromise in regard to inflation. Opening the Parkes by-election campaign Mr J. G. Latham, the Federal Nationalist leader, denounced the inflation policy of Labour's left wingers and assured Mr Scullin of his support —without coalition.

MR LYONS WILLING TO STAND DOWN.
Received 12.30 p.m. to-clav. HOBART, Jan. 10. In a speech at a dinner Mr J. E. Lyons, aeting-Federal Treasurer, said: •j am quite willing to stand down if others can do the job better.” He paid a tribute to Mr Scullin, who, he said, was a “delightful fel--19W.” Mr Lyons added: “What becomes of me is of no consequence, but what happens to Australia matters a great deal. ”
HOPES FOR THE FUTURE

MEASURES.

The “Daily Mail” in a leader says that great hopes are being built toi the future by the action of Mr J- H. Scullin, who apparently was taking vigorous measures to cope with the financial crisis. “Much depends upon what he does in the next few weeks,” states the article, and Australia’s situation should open British politicians e\es. It shows a need for drastic economy here before it is too late and before irreparable mischief is done. The “Morning Post’s” financial editor says that England never was backward in fulfilling the role of banker to the world. As far a.s Australia was concerned every conceivable motive was present to inspire sympathetic aid. Those who _ were concerned with the position in Australia looked eagerly for indications that Labour, in common with the rest of the community, was accepting the requirements of the situation and was prepared to back those anxious to
