NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Maecenas.”) 'The old Martian gelding was last of four runners at the .Hawke’s Bay meeting, and it does not appear that In* w ill again strike form. Biding at Ellerslie on Friday last, T. Green, A. E. Ellis, K. Vpitre, and S. Gerrand were energetic enough to take on the long trip to the Wairarapa, where they were rewarded with success at the Wairarapa Racing Club’s meeting last Saturday. The Swell ran an excellent race in the Stratford Cup, but his showing in the Malone 'Memorial on the second day was many pounds inferior. This gelding is well, and is worth remembering for future racing. Marjoram ran two tine races at Stratford, but in eacli event had not the best of luck. Marjoram is a con- ■ sistent gelding that should pick up a small handicap ere long. For a comparative novice at jumping, Goblin Market is quite satisfactory, and if he goes on as at present he will do good service for Trainer J. Fryer. A. McCormae, who is now putting on weight, made his debut to the facing public as a. hurdle rider at; Stratford last Friday, when he rode Tenacre in the Mnkuri Hack Hurdles. Tenacre jumped safely, but rather extravagantly-

Chief Savage was solidly backed for his engagement at Stratford, but his light-weight rider, who has had little experience, was of no use to the gelding. .Chief Savage ran well and looks like being useful. * • -K- * As anticipated, the various receipts of the Stratford Racing Club showed a decided drop over the recent meeting, but were actually better than many well informed officials thought they would be. In fact, the totalisator figures and the gate returns compared more than favourably with other clubs racing at that time. The northern hack Tradesman ran very consistently at the holiday meetings and captured a stake both nr New Plymouth and Stratford. While he is fast over a few furlongs, Tradesman may not do well against open company. Sentown ran quite a good race in the Stratford Cup to finish fourth, but at no stage of the race was ho going like a winner. This gelding does best when the tracks are soft and for the next few months may want careful handling.

"When running prominently at Stratford last Thursday, Silver Rule got galloped on, losing a plate as the result of such, i She could not. start on tin 1 second day, blit ns she is rapidly approaching her best form, she should have little difficulty in paying her wav, at least among hack company. The different class of racehorses is at times very pronounced, and the recent meeting at Stratford brought to light a case. In Lite Douglas Handicap on the opening day Chief Link was not at any time dangerous under his light iin post of 7.5, lint in the weaker class of the Electric, Handicap on the second day, lie handled the big load of 9.7 successfully. On the latter occasion Chief Link tins admirably ridden l>v A. McCormae. Cue nl the best race (.racks in this Dominion, that, of the .Stratford Racing! Club is a particularly trying one. It is a pitfall for even experienced riders, and meeting after meeting one sees races lost through riders being over anxious. If a runner' is well placed at the home turn it is not necessarv for his rider to become really active fill half way down the long straight. Most lads try to win from the half-mile post. | In the late autumn High Ealiitin’ gave promise of developing into a useful handicap performer, but his subsequent running was most disappointing. Of late this gelding has shown a return to form, as after running a fine race in the, recently run M'aimwatu Cup, he was brought north to win the two chief | races til 'Strat ford, llis next appearance will be in the Wellington Cup and lie may run well, even in that select company.

The so-called “open’’ -High-weight Handicap, decided at the recent meeting at Stratford, were little better in class than hack contests. The fact that Tenfeall and Crennatown were successful is the answer to the statement. After having bad luck in several •aces, Crennatown rewarded his owners with a win at Stratford Inst Fridav. Like most of Archiostown ‘s stock, Crennatown has size, and a litile weight does not hamper him.
