STRATFORD RACES

EVENTS

GOLD DAWN WINS OPEN SIX

THREE FAVOURITES SCORE.

Except for a light shower which failVid to cause any discomforture the ‘summery weather which ruled for the opening'of the Stratford Facing Club's annual fixture held throughout the eoneluding programme yesterday. With the tracks in splendid condition the facing proved fast and interesting and 'the sport replete with interest. 1 ~As' recorded in the late edition of yestycrday’s ‘'‘Star,” the Fordel trained High Falutin’ added to its success ; of the first day by coming home a win. •ner in the Malone Memorial yesterday -after being made a popular favourite with Marjoram again in second berth. The Ngaere Handicap was won by •the New Plymouth trained Gold Dawn 'from a good field of eight, with the Waikato gelding Tradesman in second place. Taranaki horses, though out of the dividend money in the principal event, ..were again prominent, three wins going io New Ply .mouth and two to Hawera. Favourites returned winning dividends in three and second dividends in two events. ‘

As was the cast on the first day the attendance again showed a decline, the total gate of £440 being £224 below that of the corresponding day of last year, while the totalisator investments amounted to £16,662, as compared with £25249—a decrease of £S,SS7. For the two days the 1931 total was £36,632 IPs, as against £52,069 at the 1930 fixture —a decrease of £15,436 10s. The officials combining with the president (Mr ,S. Pitt) and the secretary (Mr W. Power) were again to be VlVrrimended on the successful organisation of the meeting and though faces on two occasions were held up by false starts, the completion of the progf&Tume was not greatly delayed. For the second successive day the racing was pleasingly free of incident calling for official inquiry. The Queen Alexandra Band was agSFin in attendance and rendered greatly appreciated selections.

"Concluding details of the racing are:—

(Evening Hero’s performance on the first day made* him a decided favourite for the Makuri Hurdles ■with £SBO, GoiMin Market, the second choice, carrying £302. Two false starts delayed the race for several minutes, Vauclense galloping for half-a-mile on the first occasion and Razor for a, furlong oh the second. When the barrier finally rose, Vaucieuse was left. Goblin Market led at the first fence from Tenacre, Moerangi, Razor and Peg Black, but .passing the stands the pilot was Moerangi, attended closely 'by Peg Black with GCblin Market in third berth, livening Hero was then well back at the rear. At the six furlongs Moerangi and Peg Black were still in command with the others in the same positions except that Evening Hero was moving tip and Vaucieuse had fallen to Ohe tail of "the field. Evening Piero was close on Moerangi at the half-mile and. at the home turn joined Moerangi in the lead, the pair being three lengths to the good from Goblin Market, Tenacre and Razor. Rising to the final fence with an advantage of a couple of lengths. Evening: Hero appeared to have the race won when Goblin Market came with a strong challenge to take the victory by three lengths from Evening Hero, with Moerangi a similar distance back followed at intervals by Tenacre, Razor, and Peg Black, with Yartdleuse a long wav back last. Time 2.48 2-5. ’

Monalof was first out of the barrier from Singer, Potoleer and King Acre, with Gowanlea the best placed of the remainder. After going a short distance Singer took the lead to bo followed by IVioiicilof, IVliss Slieii, Kissless, and Potoleer. The run to the home turn gave no material alteration, but at the turn Monalof again took the lead with Singer running next, followed by Miss Sheff, King Acre and Cor. vven, with Gowanlea also well placed. As the field straightened out the favourite started a run which put him ahead at the judge’s box, with a margin of a length from the fast finishing Corwen, with Singer a neck back third.
