REBELS HEMMED IN
BURMA JUNGLE OFFENSIVE
(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) DELHI, Dec. 31. 'Troops and police are blocking and guarding the passers from Pega to Yonia with the object of surrounding the Burma rebels and compelling them to surrender, or penning them up in the jungle where food and water are scarce.
Rebel casualties at present are estimated at 175 dead and 75 wounded. The Government forces have two dead and six wounded. Faced with the alternative—-fight or surrender —the Tharrawaddy insurgents! chose the forme'r on Monday, and gave battle to a detachment of the' Second Fifteenth Punjab®, near the village of Udo. The rebels, armed with rifles, sporting guns and s'hort- Burmese, sword's, opened fire on the Punjabs, causing a few casualties. The soldiers returned t-hei fire, killing 60 and wounding 36. The remainder retreated into the jungle, folilowed in- the Punjabs, who continued to fire. The casualties' were unknown. TSev'en hundred men of the Burma Rifles, armed with machine-guns, joined the .pursuit.
