DRUIDS’ ASSEMBLY

GIFTS FOR CHILDREN. It is 14 years since the Druids’ Lodge in Hawera conceived the idea of a Ohrstmas tree gathering, with suitable gifts for the children, and the lodge has since arranged such an assembly every year and delighted the hearts of many hundreds of little ones las the festive season came round. This year’s function was held in the Winter Show Buildings last night and was attended by hundreds of members, their wives and children. All enjoyed a delightful evening. The tree was attractively arranged and decorated with presents for all the little ones, nearly 500 receiving a gift suited to the age of each child. In addition there was a plentiful supply of soft drinks and sweets. Father Christmas and lliis retinue were in attendance. having come from “abroad” in time-honoured style and they saw that not a child was overlooked. A series of competitions were conducted for the children, the results being as follow: Laughing competition, 8. Richards 1, J. Ramsay 2; quoits, W. Wright 1, J. W. Wann 2; pig tail. A. Evans 1. C. Nicholas 2; fizz, T. Corbett 1. C. Nicholas 2; sausages, M. Dymond 1, G, Nicholas 2; skipping (7 to 10), Betty Archbold 1, K. Dick 2; skipping (11 to 14), P. BuekIlev 1. J. McDonald 2; skipping (5 to 7), M. Armstrong 1. O. Crombie 2; sausages. Miss Evans 1. Miss Watkins 2: recitation (6 to 8). Joyce Dick 1. Bettv Coombe 2; recitation (9 to 12). G. King 1, J. Goodwn 2; pig tail. Miss N. King 1, Miss Cann 2; fizz. Miss Buckler 1, Miss Evans 2; peas in a bottle (correct number 685). Miss N. Jacks (869); doll cradle, Mrs J. Goodwin (selected name Catherine). Supper was served by _ Mrs W. Adams and her band of assistants and enioved by all.

Last Tuesday Father Christmas and staff paid bis annual visit to the Public Hospital and each child in the wards received a toy, with sweets and fruit. On behalf of the children the nurses expressed cordial appreciation of the kindness and liberality of the visitors.
