HIGH SCHOOL CRICKET

HAWERA. HOLD SILSON CUP

MUCH INTERESTING PLAY

The cricket match between Hawera and Feilding High Schools for possession of the Silson Cup was concluded yesterday afternoon, Hawera winning by a decisive margin and l thus retaining possession of the cup, which they won from Feilding last year. As reported in yesterday’s /‘Star,” they made 170 in their first innings. Feilding were not so successful and were all dismissed for 89, Hawera therefore winning by 81 runs. Prebble and Thompson opened confidenflv for Feilding, hut the howling and fielding were good and runs came slowly. At 10 Bmmittb clean bowled Prebble and Thompson was soon dismissed by a smart return from the field. Hoffmeister played an invaluable innipgs and with Crump and' Mitchell put on 47 runs. Two more wickets then fell cheaply andi then Barltrop, the skipper, defied the efforts of the local howlers and was unbeaten for 22 when the. last wicket fell. Had he been better supported, the team would have stood a better chance of victory. The bowl in tr honours for Hawera were well distributed. Hawera went in again, but the play was not taken very seriously in the second innings. They lost six wickets for 47 runs.

The smart fielding and accurate returns to the wicket by the Hawera hoys were outstanding features of the play and were much appreciated by the onlookers. It was distinctly good to see .such really excellent fielding, saving many runs and securing, at least two j wickets. Scores: FEILDING, First Innings.
