PROGRESS OF CONFERENCE HUGE AGENDA PAPES. SPOKESMAN QUESTIONED.

“The British spokesman, answering j |ournalists ’ interrogations ejonoeining 1 restless public opinion about the Imperial Conference’s progress and lollow- ■ jjjii- Mr. Forbes’ outspokenness, said: “We must be patient; we should remember that the 1926 conference was (mainly occupied by constitutional questions‘which were not concluded under six weeks. The present conference has 'a'huge agenda, much bigger than that of 1926, and lia-s important oonstitu--1 tionaT questions, besides an enormous 1 economic agenda. Actually the nolle . has progressed rapidly. I y barrage of questions was inuaiecl at the spokesman regarding tariffs. He admitted that the questions submitted by the Whitehall experts l were now before the Government, but the Government had already made it clear 'chat it was not willing to negotiate tariffs Accordingly the economic discussions had been confined to the so- \ cailecl alternatives.

Mr. Forbes and other delegates were entertained at luncheon bv the Carlton Ladies’ Club, Viscountess Bridgeman presiding, and had dinner at Canadian Club, after which they attended a South African reception. Mr Forbes to-night welcomed the news from Wellington that Parliament had o-one into recess and expressed the opinion, contrary to general expectations. that his Government would last the full three-year term. He ciated the manner in which the Opposition had observed the political truce m his absence and his only regret was the earlier misleading Press reports here that his Government was defeated when the subject concerned was an unimportant departmental point.
