The blow which overthrew the administration was struck by .a group l or army and navy officers in, Rio de Janeiro, where provisional headquarters are being set up. The proclamation issued to all Brazilians to end the civiL warfare came with, dramatic suddenness shortly after midnight. . Military police and some troops taking up l a position around the 1 residential palace and cutting off traffic. General Medina Barrnto, head or the Rio garrison, acting in the name or the civil and military committee, went to the President, demanding his resignation. but for many hours the latter refused.

Oct. 24 The riots which attended the attacks upon the Government appeared to have mietened down by sunset and the police controlled the strategic centres Greats crowds in the streets' showed good nature cheering their political idols as they passed. In spite of the general understanding earlier that the President resigned he still was refusing to sign the decree or resignation late in the- afternoon, saying that he would leave the palace only as"'a. bound prisoner. In point of met the President is virtually deposed. The oalace is surrounded: by military units l oval to the military junta.. The Government stronghold at oao Paulo also appears to he overthrown. Disnatches' said that there was firing against the Government palace and 15 minutes later a white flag was run uip. There were indications that the Presi-dent-elect. Senor Prestos, against whom the insurrection was principally directed, would; quit.
