COMMERCIAL MEN’S VIEWS.

SUPPORT FOR MR FORBES

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) THE HERMITAGE, Oct. 28. The conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce to-night decided to forward the following cable to Mr G. W. Forbes, the Prime Minister: “The Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand, assembled at the annual conference, heartily appreciate your efforts toward preference and reciprocity along the lines of resolutions 17 to 20 of the Empire Congress. New Zealand is happy to give preference to Great Britain, but views the suggestion of the bulk purchases scheme with great misgiving.’’ Resolutions referred to the. conference emphatically declared that the future economic well-being of the peoples owing allegiance to the King called for concerted, determined and immediate effort on the part of his Majesty’s Governments to formulate an economic policy for the Empire which would result in closer co-operation between the constituent parts; that the various Governments of the Empire bo urged to nxlamine their own fiscal policies without, delay with a view to ascertaining in what respects they may be amended in the interests of trade with other portions of the Empire, yyitli due regard to the integrity of their own commerce: that this conference once more reiterates its conviction that a wide and well-considered extension of the system of Imperial preferences would be found i to be the most effective means of bring- ' ing about a greater measure of Imperial economic cohesion; that the conference urges the importance in Empire trade of voluntary co-operation and co-ordination and intra-Tmperia l mergers, and the interchange of visits, and more intimate exchange of ideas and experiences between the business' I men of the Empire.
