THE CASTLE PLEDGE.

I promise to smile every time I can, and to chase all tno frowns into the dark cave, where the Smile Giant, will kill them with his Magic Sword Happiness.

My Dear Smiles, — With the near approach of the annual school examinations I expect you all to be working hard at your lessons in order to ensure a pass. It will not he many weeks now ‘ before you trill be thinking - about Christmas holidays, but before that happy time comes there is much to be thought of and accomplished. Writing - of the holidays reminds me that there is still _ plenty of room in the Gift Cupboard. I am hopeful that the Cupboard will be full to overflowing - again Ihis year, as it. has always been since my Smiles first began to interest themselves in less fortunate children. You know, there is a great benefit to be derived by the Smiles themselves, beside the children who receive the gifts, from woi-k done for the Cupboard. If we learn to think of others as we go through life we cannot help hut grow bigger in character—and you will always find the most genuinely happy people are those who are thoughtful of others, helpful, unselfish and kind. Did any of my Smiles see and hear the Blind Institute Band when it ivas in Hawera recently? What an exmple those blind people give to all of us! How eager they are to learn and how brave they are in overcoming their great handicap. When Ave think of them, their joy in Avork and their cheerfulness, Ave should realise lioav easy it should be for us to be happy, interested in our Avork, cheerful and kindly. Now I am going to leaA'e you to get ready some nice little stories Avhich have been sent to me specially for the Smile Castle readers. Be sure to read them, Smiles; I am sure you Avill like them. Your affectionate, SMILE QUEEN.
