WIDOW’S BANKRUPTCY
BOARDINGHOUSE VENTURE FAILS
Creditors in the bankrupt estate of Airs Honour Bell, boardinghouse keeper, of Hawcra, were to have met yesterday, but the meeting lapsed, for want of a quorum. A statement showed that £l2B 3s lid was owed to unsecured creditors. There were book debts of approximately £2B, but these could not be collected, while furniture was valued at £46, leaving a deficiency of £S2 3s lid. Included in the list of unsecured creditors were A. C. Pease £3O, McCormick and Co. £33, Home Supplies £23 10s, and the Hawera Hospital Board £l3 11s Cd. The remaining amounts were for the most part of less than £3. In her statement Airs Bell said that her husband had died in January, and after his death she had been compelled to provide for herself, a daughter and a grandson by taking boarders. The venture was unsuccessful for the reason that she did not have a sufficient number of boarders and, of those she had, three had left owing heiya total Of £2B 10s. She was behind in rent and tradesmen’s accounts, and the consequent worry undermined her health. In August she had entered hospital for treatment. Her daughter also had been in hospital and was unable to earn anything. She had nothing to offer her 'creditors, and could see no hope of paying her debts.
