MR P. H. JONES, INDEPENDENT.

VISIT TO HAWEEA DISTRICT.

Mr Pei Te Huriuui Jones, ludependcut candidate for the Western Maori seat at the forthcoming by-election, has commenced his campaign in the Taranaki district. Mr Jones, who is accompanied by his brother, Mr J. N. Jones. Ongarue, and Mr H. Bennett, son of the Bishop of Ao-tc-aroa, will spend a week in the district addressing Maori electors. A very busy time was spent in Waitara and district yesterday. After placing his views before an enthusiastic gathering Mr Jones was accorded a nearty vote of thanks and an assurance of strong support. To-day the candidate spent in the Okaiawa district, where he visited the leading Maori farmers and other members of the native race. During his visit Mr Jones will be the guest of his brother, Mr M. Kotoliiko Jones, Hawera, organiser for the Young Maori Party in Taranaki, who for some time has been canvassing the district. Mr P. T. Hurinui Jones, who was an officer in the Native Department in charge of the consolidation and development of Native lands in the King Country, has had to sever his connection with the department to take part in the present campaign. , The Young Maori Party, which both Sir Apirana Ngata and the late Sir Maui Pomare helped.to form, is a very progressive body which in recent years ; , has been the means of bringing about aAbetter understanding between the various tribes in New Zealand.
