THE UNEMPLOYED
TARANAKI CASES QUOTED
INGLEWOOD FAMILIES ALMOST
STARVING
(By Telegrrapli—Special to “The Star.”; WELLINGTON, Sept. 10. When the report on unemployment was being discussed in the House yesterday, Mr W. J. Poison (Stratford) stressed the importance of promptly dealing with the giowing problem. He had just received a telegram that there were 16 families at Inglewood almost starving because the breadwinners could not get employment. Ho was- asking the Government to do something at once. Mr A. M. Samuel (Thames)': What about sending them a cheque? Mr Poison: Perhaps the hon. gentleman will deal with it. Some .sustenance should be provided at once. Mr Poison prophesied that economic conditions would get worse, and the situation must be faced. While reduced wages' were not desirable it might be a necessary part of the economic adjustment. To give single men 14s per day on relief works was not going ip help the problem.
