BLENHEIM. PIONEER PASSES.

MR ARCHIBALD MeCALLUM.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, Sept. 9. One of Marlborough’s best known public men, Mr Archibald McCallum, passed away at his residence at Blenheim after a lengthy illness. The third sou of the late Archibald McCallum, one of the district’s earliest settlers, he was born at Blenheim on April 27. 1860, and was thus 70 years of age. He was educated at the borough school, afterwards learning farming on his father’s property, Waterlea, which embraced a big area of the finest agricultural land, now occupied by Pollard Park and the Waterlea racecourse. In the year 1888 Mr McCallum started farming on his own account on a. portion of the Waterlea property, working it in conjunction with a. leasehold section at Spring Creek. He continued to be interested in farming pursuits right up to the time of his death, for though he, together ivith his brother, Hon.' E. McCallum, disposed of a portion of Waterlea to the Marlborough Pacing Club about ten years ago, he still owned in partnership with his brother, a very extensive cattle and sheep farming estate in the Waikato. In 1902 he established the well-known tiourmilling business at Grove Road and continued to carry this on ever since. Mr McCallum became Mayor of Blenheim in 1907 and retained office in 1908 , and in 1909, in which year he was also president of the Marlborough Jubilee Association. As Government representative on the Marlborough Land Board, lie had a. particularly meritorious record. Becoming a member first in May, 1907, he remained on the board until May, 1910. He was off the board fro in then until 1918, when he was re-ap-pointed, and he continued to be a member up to the time of his death. He also held positions as member and chairman of the Wairau River Board, chairman of the Wairau Harbour Board, and president of the A. and P. Society. In his younger days he was a keen Rugby player and in 1885 was a mem- | ber of the Marlborough team that de--1 tori N’olsrm.
