The Australian cricket team commenced its match against the South ef England at Folkestone this morning. South of England won the toss and went in to bat-. The weather is fine and the wicket in good order. Hammond. ~ When stumps were drawn for the day South of England had last five wickets for 249 runs. Tlie Australians provided the opening match at, the Folkestone cricket festival. , . Wyatt and Hearne scored slow ij, hut later dealt confidently with Gi inline tt, who injured* a finger. At lunch tlie score was 76 without loss. -Every bowler had been tried. In the first over after adjournment Hearne flicked one from Wall and was caught. , . , Hammond livened the scoring and the side’s 100 appeared after 130 minutes The second wicket fell at IGb wnen Wyatt after a patient 100 minutes, in which lie scoured five fours, was caught at the wicket. The Australian bowling was rarely dangerous, suffering staleness and the fielding was below standard. At tea the total was two for Mb. Two wickets fell in quick succession. Laiidridge was out to a good catch by Jackson and Hammond trod on the* wicket. He batted 120 minutes and got five fours. Chapman began brilliantly, scoring three fours in on© over from Wall and continued to slam the bowling in all directions. He rattled up 40 in 35 minutes including nine fours.
