WARWICK STAKES NIGHTMARCH HAS TOP WEIGHT. (United Presa Association—By Electric Telegranh Copyrhrnt.) SYDNEY. Aug. 25, For the Warwick Stakes next Saturday Nightmareh heads the weights with 9st. 31 h. Limerick, Am-ounis, Fuiisan and Chide will each carry Pst, Loquacious 8.12, and Phar Lap 8.11. Night-march struck a hind leg during a brilliant gallop on Saturday. A veterinary surgeon treated the injury, which has much- improved. Racing men’s doubts about the mission. of Tom Pinch were setted to-day when the owner said he would he a certain starter in the Epsom Handicap.

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Maecenas.”! Favour cell with splendid acceptances the Thrmicvirke Racing Club should have a first-class meeting to-morrow. Not- only will the fields be- big, but an excellent- class of performer yvill be seen in, action. Several young three-year-olds are engaged, and their presence at. this, early spring- gathering yvill add to the interest. n ** * * *

Few of those engaged in the Glengarry Hack Hurdles have any jumping recommendation, but there is material for a goad race amongst the acceptors. Dobbin has had some experience over jumps, but so- far ’has not impressed. Juggle is a. maiden hurdler, but as he lias a lot of pace, is well grown: and carries weight well, lie may turn out very useful in this department of racing! 'Masher had -a couple of races over small fences at Napier Park last June. He, jumped really well on those occasions, and may prove dangerous tomorrow. iWliakaue beat a very poor class at din stings- last. (Saturday, but as lie jumped iwell, he is entitled to respect. (Circumstances make this event difficult for backers, but Juggle, Maslier and Whakauc should; not be neglected.

With twenty-three engaged in the Tiratu Maiden 'Stakes there is plenty of choice. Jason has shown -brilliancy •on! more than one- occasion, and even in such a big field backers should be prepared to accept a short price abc-ut this young threc-year.old. Laconic ran a close third at Hastings last Saturday and may prove dangerous to Jason. * * * * *

A very nice field of ten are engaged in the Neagl-e Handicap. The nine stone should prove troublesome to Marjoram, but Hynamra at 8.10 is nicely placed. He showed a glimpse of form at Awapuni last month, and as he has gone on correctly lie can he relied: on to run well. 'Black Mint disappointed at RiceartOn recently, hut. 'Blimp went fair races at the same meeting. Shrewd won at- Hastings last week and will lie extremely dangerous in this class if he lias done sufficient- work. Three likely to run prominently are Blimp, llyuauna and Shrewd.

Sintba represents class in the TJinutaoroa Hack. He has not- had a race for many months, and although he is well forward lie- may feel the want of a good gallop in! public. Toronto has Speed, but may n.ot quite see out- the journey. Repay is iwell just now, and a similar remark applies l to- Aemil. Srimba and Aemil .may make an Interesting contest. Risk and Kovno went good races at Napier Park last Saturday, but at the weights Sir Moment hold them safe, while •obi Handy might cause most trouble to -Sir Moment.

A number of promising performers are engaged in the President’® Hack. Last, season Jenny Diver registered several good performances, and in the autumn at BHerslie ifa'Cat such good two-year-olds as Hard Words and Tenterden in tlie Champagne 'Stakes. She will l>e at a disadvantage in not, having had a race for months, but her class should pull her through in a hack event, in which she has only 8.9. Knhikatoa, was most unlucky at Hastings last week, and as he can gallop when right, his forward condition may stand to him. Pat’s Hoy ran well at Awapuni recently, and; no doubt will command a following, but the three-year-olds, Jenny 'Diver and Kahikatoa, should prove his superior.

Several of the acceptors for the 'Rualiino 'Handicap mill be well supported. Marjoram, My Own, Royal Damon, and Royal 'Game are assured of good support. The light weight, Kilmoy.zo, has run a couple of good rpees of late, and he may effect a surprise to-morrow. To reduce the number, Royal Damon ami IMy Own are named. A very small field will probably com- - pete for the iHarrisi Handicap, and backers will no doubt select Shortly as one likely to take a leading jrart in its settlement. Knightlike ’s half brother, (Sympathetic, trained by J. IT. Jeff or cl, was amongst the runners for the Okawa Maiden 'Plate at Hastings on Saturday last. Ridden by IT. Gray, Sympathetic showed some speed away from the 1 barrier, and' was very prominent for lialf-n-milc. His condition then failed, and he weakened into the ruck. Sympathetic shows quajity, and it will come, as a surprise should lie not pay his way ivvhen seasoned. Xea Lap, the younger sister to the mighty Phar Lap, was a competitor at the Hawke's Bay Hunt Club meeting last Saturday. 'Her rider drew number one at the barrier, but missed the “jump out,’’ and thereafter was fighting with Xea 'Lap, so no guide as to her capabilities could' be formed' on the showing. Since her last public appearance Xea Lap has furnished considerably, and may yet do credit to her illustrious brother. The Australian bredl three-year-old, Commandant, made a favourable impression, when he entered the weighing enclosure at Hastings last Saturday. A good coloured' chestnut, this son of Legionuiro'-Hees-in-Amber shows remarkable quality. At present, lie is somewhat extravagant in action. Whether age and experience will cure this remains to be seen. Trainer Alexau-

dor lias a very high opinion of [Commandant, and experts- him to win classic honours. It is possible that Commandant will contest the Wanganui Guineas, but- should he net contest that event he is certain to take his place in the- fieldi for the Avondale Guineas. The son of Legionaire showed l a. lot of brilliancy to win at- 'Hastings last Saturday, but had he not- shoiwn outstanding gameness, Aemil must have beaten him. * *

During an interval between races at the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club meeting at Hastings last- -'Saturday a number of two-year-olds l were sent- up the straight. Taken all round, they were more backward than is usual with “Bay’’ youngsters, but several went quite pleasingly. Dozie, a filly that -claims Lucullus— Prosy as her breeding, moved attractively to lead in the first heat. Poi Girl, by Cockpit—Huia Girl, is very nicely turned and showed more pace than her opponents. Egila, another filly that claims Cockpit as sire, and Actaeg'on, -a really well grown- gelding ] by Hunting Bong-—'Crisis, from the sue- I eessful Jeff orb stable, also attracted attention by their moving qualities. Still another filly in Lady Makere (Lord Quox —Makere) won her heat from three others.
