TRAGEDY AT MANAIA

OLD RESIDENT FOUND SHOT. DEATH IN HOSPITAL. -Frightfully injured . about- the head and face' Mr George Morecfaft, aged 80, was found lying near the_ milking shed on his son’s , farm, Manaia Road, Manaia, yesterday morning, with a single barrelled shotgun between his legs. He was admitted to the Hawera Hospital, hut succumbed shortly afterwards. As was usual deceased rose early and lit the kitchen fire and fed the fowls while his son and' daughter-in-law did the milking. There was no sign of Mr Morecraft before breakfast and it was thought likely that he had gone for a walk. When he failed to appear for breakfast a search was made, with the tragic discovery. Constable Scannell was informed about 10 a.m. and had the man conveyed to hospital as speedily as possible. Deceased was predeceased by his wife some 10 months ago.
