BIG MILL DESTROYED

BLAZE AT PALMERSTON NORTH ''Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., July 37. A timber mill and! box factory owned by William Cook and Sons was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday evening. The blaze was probably the largest and most destructive in Palmerston North for a number of years, and certainly the most spectacular. The flames, fanned by a strong westerly breeze, had gripped the whole structure before the brigade arrived, although advised of the outbreak by a private automatic alarm system installed in the mill. The fire-fighters confined their efforts to saving adjoining buildings and timber-stacks, covering about an acre of ground. The damage-is estimated at. £15,000, while a large number of men will be thrown out of work. Firemen had several narrow escapes. The city was thrown into darkness as the result of the flames melting fuses on the main feeder lino, while the telegraph lines connecting (with: Hawke’s Bay were broken.

The need fey protection against fire loss is obvious. Consult the Mercantile and .General Insurance Company, jAd. Local Agent: E. Hardley, Victoria St., Hnwera. ’Phone 2474. —Advt.
