OLD=TIME MOTORING
An English motorist of very long standing told recently of a- car which he owned some 25 years ago, the huge, four-c.vlinder engine of which was extremely difficult to start. Even a strong man could only manage to crank it half a turn at a time. After a few unsuccessful efforts it became essential to know whether the mixture was too weak or too rich, because, il too rich, no amount of physical effort would start the brute. Necessity being i the mother of invention, the followsqfieme was adopted wit'ii sneAfter a. few turns a. sparking plug was removed and a lighted match .applied to the orifice; the kind of flame produced by the mixture gave an infallible indication of its strength ! This method has an historical interest, but is not passed on as a hint to the new motorist!
