MEETING UNEMPLOYMENT
POSITION WEILL IN HAND (By Telegraph— Press Association.) -WELLINGTON, July 23. Mr J. S. Fletcher asked in the House of Representatives to-day what the Government intended ‘to dp to meet the immediate unemployment situation. 1 Hon. E. A. Ransom assured the House that the 'Cabinet Unemployment Committee had tine position-, (well in hand. Arrangements! were being made in all the principal centres 'to* place men in einployment. Not that they were able to offer employment to all who were out of work, but urgent easels were being dealt with very. generously. Arrangements were being made for placing men on land development, and in some ease® men were being drafted* to that class of work, while provision was also being made: for other, drafts later. 'Careful surveys we.ro being made before the men were placed. Mr W. Downie Steiwart: How many unemployed are on the payroll at present?
Mr Ransom): I think about 4000. There are more men 1 employed' oni relief works now than for many years past.
