DISASTROUS EARTHQUAKE

An earthquake rocked southern Italy soon, after 1 o’clock in the morning. A widespread area is affected. In Naples, which is near the centre of 'the disturbance, three violent shocks caused a panic in the densely-populated slum districts. The electric lights failed, adding terror to the situation and making relief work most difficult.. The palace at Naples practically collapsed, killing two. Altogether 'll6 ,wc.ro killed! •and 100 injured in the city.
in the surrounding towns many church towers are tottering. Firemen and the military are rendering valuable help. The 11th century cathedral at Salerno is partially destroyed. Troops and doctors-are being rushed to the affected area.
