COURSING AT PATEA

EIGHTH ANNUAL GATHERING

GOOD RUNS AND FEW KILLS

The eighth annual coursing meeting of the Patea-Hawera Coursing Club, under the rules of the National Coursing Association of Australasia, was commenced yesterday on Mr, James Bourke’.s property at Whenuakura. Considering the wintry nature of the weather conditions, which, thougn dry, were bitterly cold, there was an excellent attendance of spectators. The programme comprised contests for 'the McKenna Cup and the •Johnnie Walker Cup, 23 dogs actually competing for the former and 14 for the latter trophy. The McKenna Cup, to be won twice by the same' owner of winning dogs, lias been in competition ever since the inception of the club, while the other trophy is to lie won outright at this—the first —year’s competition.

For the McKenna Cup the first and second rounds were completed, hut only the first round for the open event was run. Each of the 24 courses was splendidly contested and few kills were recorded , the total for the , whole afternoon being 10, an indication that the hares had been well cared for and were in good condition. • In addition to the local contenders, competitors. were drawn from a wide area, including Hnwera, Opunake, New Plymouth, \Yaltara, Inglewood, Wa-

nganui, Wangaehu, Palmerston North, Bell Block and Masterton. Much of the success of the actual working of, and initial preparation for, the meeting is due to the club’s lion, secretary and treasurer (Mr. F. S. McKenna), who was ably supported by the following officers: Patron, Mr. A. T. Christensen; president, Mr. L. Hunt; vice-presidents, Dr. Simmons, Messrs J. W. Bourke, F. RamSbottom, E. Hurley, J. Hannan, A. Freyne, J. McCarty, W. O’Brien, T. Bowen, D. Quickenden, J. Paterson, F. W. Locker, S. Bromley, C. Bradford; slipper, Mr. O. Sheahan; slip steward, Mr. J. Gunn; hare stewards, Messrs F. J. Bourke and IT. Neal; judge, Mr. S. Galbraith (Wanganui). General satisfaction at the judge’s decisions was expressed by the competitors. Afternoon tea was—and will be today—available on the grounds, a willing band of both sexes of the club’s supporters supervising this important department. Throughout the day the sport was clean and the prevailing note among competitors was the utmost goodfellowship, the defeated contestants taking their reverses in true sporting spirit.
