WANGANUI, May 17. Air Force was a good favourite for the Hack Hurdles, hut lost his rider, after going half-a-mile, Town Bird and Wyeford Jed into tire turn, the latter being first into the straight. Second Thoughts was close up. The latter finished best and won by a length from

Lin Arlington. First Ruler was fourth ami Valina next. (tenoral Gas was a slightly, better favourite than Werata for the Balgowuici Hack. Latakia led' most of the way and was first into tire straight from B.jnbridge and Auctioneer. A splendid finish resulted in favour of Worata by a short bead from Banbridge, who beat Latakia by a similar margin. Brilliant light was, fourth. Aurora Borealis was a slightly better favourite than Prince Lu for the May Hurdles. The latter took charge at the. start and led all the way to win by a length a.hd-a-half from Perl© de Leon, with Beaumont a neck away, just ahead of Elicit. Red. Bank was a slightly better favourite than Airtight and Brigadier Bill for the Grandstand Steeples. Maidos made the early running, hut Flying Swift took charge halfa-amile from, home and won by four lengths from Ivowhatu, who beat Airtight by a similar margin. Calithe and Red Bank fell. The rider of the former, L. Du lieu, was badly injured. Silvermine was a hot favourite for the Empire Handicap, but lie had to be content with second place, High Faintin’, who was handy a.ll the way. finishing strongly to win by half-a-neck from the favourite. Austerity was close up third, just ahead of Atholspear. Valstreefc was favourite for the Farewell Hack.
