opera; house “talkies

‘ ‘SWEETIE’ ’-TO-NIGHT.

What a great cast there is in the new Paramount youth and joy picture, “Sweetie,” which opens a limited season at the Opera. House to-night. Built for fun and gladness, “Sweetie” is the breath of youth. The story is of youth, the people are young, and there is happiness throughout. Not a dull moment, not a. passing cloud of sadness, to cast a shadow. Heading the special cast are Nancy Carroll, Paramount’s popular red head, and Helein Kane, a newcomer to the screen. Both these young ladies add to the excitement and fun of the picture, and other prominent roles are taken by Stanley Smith. Jack Oakie and William Austin. All these players are well known, with the exception of Stanley Smith, who comes to the screen for the first time. The story is fast, fresh and youthful. The booking for to-night is heavy, and intending patrons- are advised to reserve their seats at Miss Blake’s. AH telephone .reserves not called for by T.oO p.m. will be sold.

GRAND THEATRE.

DOUBLE' BILL TO-NIGHT. This evening at the Grand Theatre an outstanding double-feature bill will be presented, headed by “Annapolis,” a remarkably appealing picture of the U.S. Navy Academy, teeming with thrill scenes and with' a tensely dramatic climax. The seconcT attraction will be the Bathe picture “Celerity.” Also on the same programme, the thrilling serial, “The Pirates of Panama,” will be presented. Intending patrons are advised to be early.. MANAIA “TALKIES.” “WISE GIRLS.” “Wise Girls,” which is playing at Manaia Theatre to-uiglit, is much enlarged and expanded production of the stage comedy. “Kempy.” well-known in Australia. The greater mobility of the all-talking picture permits the story to play in and out of the Bence house and around the entire neighbourhood. The enlargement of scene and dialogue thus made possible has, it is said, added many new laughs to a domestic comedy which had already Won outstanding laurels. The two Nugents of the stage version also play their original parts in this Metro-Goldwyn-Mnycr picture, and Roland Young, of “Unholy Night” fame, is included in the fine east. Here’s a picture for everybody to see. Pawn. Bence- wanted to see his girls married, but while angling for a millionaire, a plumber came in and copped the peach of his orchard! A loveable, bubbling, natural, human comedy of everyday people! The -supporting programme includes the famous “Our Gan s’ Kids” in the all-talking comedy “Boxing Gloves.'”
