AUSTRALIANS COLLAPSE

ALL OUT FOR 156 TAIL END FAILS BADLY KIPPAX TOP SCORER. (United Preou Axeociatior —By Electric Telegraph Copyrigtiv) Received 10.30 a.m. to-day. LONDON, May 7. Rain threatened when the Australians commenced their match against Essex at Leyton to-day. The outfield was slow, and the covering of the wicket had not prevented it being soaked, but the absence of sunshine outruled the possibility of a difficult pitch. The teams are: Australia. —Woodfull, Kippax, Ponsford Fairfax. Jackson, Grimmett, Me, Cube, Oldfield, a’Bwkett, Hurwood, Hornibrook. Essex. —Bray (captain), Crawley, H. Smith, H. Palmer, Russell, O’Connor, Nichols, Hipkiu, Sheffield, Cutmove, POpe. TXT X Australia won the toss, and Woodfull began with memories, of bis previous Essex match wherein he scored a double century. Nichols is regarded as England s second fastest and best bowler. He bowled with fine pace and should have secured Woodfull’s wicket in his second over, hut the catch was dropped in the slips. The first ball of Palmer’s second over beat Woodfull. The Australians collapsed sensationally. a tricky wicket being blamed. Rain fell several times during the day, and the wind was bitterly cold. Essex launched a splendid attack, Nichols making the hall hump awkwardly at times, and at other times it kept low. Palmer also howled splendidly. Wood full’s dismissal heartened the home side, and McCabe, who was never • comfortable, was soon well caught. An hour’s play produced 59 runs, of which Ponsford had scored 30. Kippax and Ponsford made a valuable stand; but, with Jackson’s early dismissal, four wickets were down for 92, and the Australians’ position was not bright. Palmer rattled Fairfax’s and a’Beckett’is wickets in quick succession, hut meanwhile Tvinpax had been driving and cutting delightfully. With his dismissal after tea the Australian innings virtually ended, the others failing to keep out the dangerous howling. The innings lasted 200 minutes.

In the remaining 55 minutes left for play three Essex batsmen were dismissed. Grimmett claimed two victims. and Fairfax, who got the other, made good use of the tricky wicket. Scores:
