FIRES IN NEW JERSEY
MILITARY FIGHTING FLAMES. MAINE TOWNS EVACUATED. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) NEW YORK, May 7. Fires continue to rage widely in New Jersey. While rain is still being awaited hopelessly, military forces are lighting the flames and the Red Cross is aiding thousands of homeless victims. Fires are also dangerous in the vicinity of Portland, Maine, where a force of fire-fighters is attempting to save the city's power-houses from fire. Several towns there have been evacuated.
