TRUCKS BREAK AWAY
200 SHEEP KILLED ACCIDENT TO SPECIAL TRAIN CRASH INTO STOP-BLOCK. 'By —Press Association.) OHAKUNE. Fob. 15. A special train of 27 truck® of sheep left Raetihi at 12.30 a.m. to-day, and when it was between Rocbfort and Ohakune it was found that the engine was unable to 1 draw the load. The train and the engine took about 15 trucks on to Ohakune Junction, leaving 'the guard in charge of the remainder. The guard ‘put qn the brakes and went along the line placing detonaters to warn the engine-driver when returning of his approach to> the trucks. By some means the trucks started off, gathering speed, and, after travelling about seven miles, round several curves, over bridges and up inclines, and up one gradient of one in 50, crashed into a stop-block at the terminus of the line at the end of the. Raetihi station yard. A van and about nine loaded trucks went over a bank. The trucks were smashed and the van was damaged and was buried in a swamp up tot its floor. About 200 sheep were killed and others, were injured. The were bought at Freeman R. Jackson’s ewe fair on Thursday. No one was hurt.
