CAMPAIGN AGAINST CRIME
ROUND=UP IN CHICAGO 3000 SUSPECTS ARRESTED BATTLE WITH BANDITS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) Received 11 a.m. to-day. NEW YORK, Feb. 14. A message from Chicago states that citizens, drawn up in battle order, fought shoulder to shoulder with unpaid police against the outlaws of the boulevards and back alleys. Two bandits were killed and two wounded.
At the end of the fifth day in the city’s campaign against organised crime altogether more than 3000 suspects have 'been rounded up, 572 men being arrested in the last few hours on suspicion of connection with the underworld. Seven of these Avere found Avith concealed weapons. A small payment of 1,849,000 dollars was made to-day to 18,000 city employees, their Avages for the firstfortnight of January.
