ILLEGAL SALE OF LiQ UOR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ASHBURTON, Feb. 14. Three men appeared in court to-day on charges in connection with the illegal sale ol : liquor. Roland T. Bailey was charged with selling liquor without a license and was fined £lO Frederick Chares Price was hned £l.O on a similar charge. Nelson Raynor Bushel! and Price, jointly charged with being parties as occupiers of the premises were fined £35 and £25 respectively. The defence was that accused were agents for a biewery and were not aware that it was a breach of the Act to hand liquor to purchasers or orderers. The agency was conducted in conjunction with a tobacconist’s business. LAWBREAKERS SENTENCED. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 14. In the Supreme Court to-day Mr. Justice Adams sentenced prisoners who had either pleaded guilty or been found guilty after trial. John Alfred Halliday for theft of postal packets (two charges) and housebreaking and theft (two charges) was committed to the Borstal institute.
William Charles Lidgett, described as an old offender, for breaking and entering and theft (two charges) was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. Leo Peter Keller, for breaking and entering and theft (six charges), was ordered three years’ detention in the Borstal.
Alfred Saunders Webster, on a charge of common assault on a. female, was sentenced to imprisonment for four months from the date of his being taken into custody. On a similar charge George Gilpin Pickens was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. CHARGES AGAINST YOUTH. FEILDING, Feb. 14. - Randall James Ferguson, an escapee from the Weraroa State Farm, was arrested to-day and charged with the theft of a horse, and other alleged crimes. He was remanded to appear before the stipendiary magistrate next week. Sergeant Cahill informed the court that Ferguson, who is 17 years old, had made a statement to the police. He had escaped from the State Farm, stolen clothes and food, and got rides in cars to Wellington and hack. He had obtained clothes at Feilding by false pretences, giving false names. He had taken a horse in Feilding to ride out into the country and had been captured by Constable Ruddell.
