MAN HEAVILY FINED
“OFFENCE AVAR-RANTS IMPRISONMENT.”
(By Teiegrapi.—Press Association.) TIMARU, Feb. 13. “Although the circumstances are suspicious, it has not been proved that defendant ham-strung the sheep, but is i.s clear that he cruelly beat the animal. Somebody, at any rate, struck one of the sheep’s legs with a sharp instrument, land this i|s an offence which merits nothing less than a term of imprisonment lam afraid that 1 can’t accept defendant’s statement that he gently touched the sheep with •his shovel. lie was obviously angry and allowed his temper to get the better of him. Defendant had a grievance against informant and t-ook his revenge on a harmless animal.”
This statement of Mr. C. R. OrrAValker, S.M., was made to-day in the Magistrate’s Court, when George Joss, foreman of the Borough Councils gang at a water-race was fined £7 10s and costs, amounting to £6 3s 6r, for having cruelly beaten a sheep at EairI’iew on November 22 of last year. '
