HAWERA SCOTTISH SOCIETY

FIRST ANNUAL PICNIC. The executive of the Hawera Scottish Society scored an undoubted success in their first annual picnic, and so pleased and satisfied are they that they look forward with confidence to a similar event each year. It was held this year at the Tongahoe Beach, Mokoia, and everyone in the large crowd presenthad a thoroughly good time. The weather was fine, though the wind was a little unpleasant, and the beach was in good condition for swimming and surfing, which, was enjoyed by a. large member of those present. Many, too, revelled in swimming in the river.

Games of various kinds were enjoyed, and a series of races was conducted, in which the winners were as follow: Girls events.—-Under seven : Irene Dowden 1, Hazel Brogden. Under nine: Margaret Cowie 1. Jean McAisey 2. Under 12: Ruth McGaffin 1, Betty Smith 2. Under 13 : Kathleen Pierce 1, Annie Lapham 2. Under 15: Mary Davidson 1, Doreen Nairn 2. Boys. —Under 12 : Don. Kerkbv 1. James Wards 2. Under 16: Ernest Velyin 1, James Henson 2. Married women.—Mrs Hannah 1, Mrs Brogden 2. Married men. —J. Nairn 1, W. Dowden 2.
