ADMINISTRATIVE! AFFAIRS. REPORTS TO T HE HOARD. The monthly meeting of the Ha- " era Hospital, Hoard, held yesterday, was attended; by Messrs J. S. McKay (chairman), F. Gilianders, L. Nairn, A. L. Campbell, E. A. Washer, S. J. Dennett, W. G, Simpson, E. J. Gifford, and T. A. Winks. The secretary stated that arrangements hud been made for an extension of the farm mortgage for a further term of seven years at the existing rate ol interest (6} per cent.). ( The medical superintendent (Dr J. Cairney) reported that at November 30 the number of patients in hospital was GS. Adlniissions during December numbered 72. Discharges and deaths during December numbered SO. and those remaining on December 31 totalled GO. The daily average; of occupied beds in December was 64.0; for the proceeding nine months (37.5; for the same period last year (38- Twenty-two hospital and five private X-ray cases were dealt with. During the- month 15 physio-therapeutic patients were discharged and 1G were still receiving treatment. The number of treatments totalled 302—an average of 14.7 per day. Fourteen out patients attended during the month mu! 68 treatments were given.

In her report for December the hospital matron (Miss Christine Hunter) stated that Sister Russell commenced her second year on December 16 and Nurse Ward her third on. December 9. Nurses Hoddinott. Cross and Allen passed the State examination, while Nurses Whisker and! M. Lash secured partial passes. All candidates passed the liopital examination for year nurses in anatom- and physiology. ‘The board’s Christmas donation of £lO, for which the thanks of patients and the staff were extended, ensured a verv merry Christmas.

In a supplementary report. the matron stated! that in consequence of a family bereavement. Nurse Cross contemnlated resigning her position. The matron of the Old People’s Home reported that on January 2 there were 19 inmates in the home and two in hospital. A.l] were keeping well. For disobedience of instructions, it was necessary to report one of the inmates. Entertainments as follows wore much appreciated by all: St,. the year ended December 31, 1929, was as follows : Milit .supplied to hospital, 000 gallons at Is 3d, £34, 13 9d; cream supplied to hospital, eight pints at 2s, Kis j bacon, 3581 b at Hid per lb, £l7 3s Id. Supplied to Old People’s Home: 93 Gallons of milk at Is 3d, £o 16s 3d; 121 bof bacon at llid, 11s 6d. Sixtyone lb of cream was supplied to the factory during the month. Two paddocks were mown for hay on the 28th. The contract for thinning and cleaning the crop was Jet for £8 10s.

Hr Bennett raised an objection to letting contracts for such work as thinning and cleaning crops, maintaining that the work could very easily be done by the permanent staff. Genera] agreement with this view was expressed and on the motion of Mr Gil In miens the matter was referred to the farm committee. 'Pile reports were adopted.

The secretary .of the Hospital Boards Association of New Zealand forwarded a circular letter from the DirectorGeneral of Health (Dr T. H. A. Valentine) outlining a proposal to appoint a small committee to visit the Otaki and Pukeora- Sanatoria from time to time and report to the. hospital boards as to their opinion of the working of those institutions. The circular pointed out that a closer co-operation between the Department of Health and the hospital boards would be achieved.

The secretary of the Hospital Boards Association in a covering: letter submitted the reply of the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy (Minister of Health) to representations made urging an amendment of the Trustee Act, 1908, • and Hospital Board Debentures, in which the Minister stated that it was regretted that the recommendation of the association, embodied in a conference resolution in July last could not be adopted.
