NOTES AND COMMENTS WELL! NGTOX I‘E~I? FORM ANCES (By “Maecenas.”) Green Linnet ran a gam,* race last Saturday. bar was not quite good enough. The annua] meeting of the Ashlmrstl‘oli.ingina Racing Diuli will take place to mori-c.w (Wednesday). The summer meeting of the Welling lon Racing (’lull concludes to-morrow. Silvermiiie began very smartly in the Telegraph lln mil c;i p last Saturday and was one of the loaders on to the course proper Lot * ver th<> last part of the race Silvermiiie quickly tired. Just So shewed some pace in the early stages of fast Saturday's Telegraph Handicap and. with a furlong to go, looked to have a fair chance of winning; however, from that on Just So weakened.

Richfield registered a really fine performance in tin* big “-s-print” -event at Trentham cn the opening day of tlu current- meeting. Just bow well Richfield began is hard to discern nil this straight six furlongs, but just before entering the straight proper Richfield was actually last. Securing a lucky run next to the rails, Richfield put in

a great, run over the last furlong, and only failed by a short head to beat j Meadow Lark for first place. £ Bright Glow ran an excellent race in j last Saturday’s Wellington Gup. She 1 really never looked t it > have a, chance | of beating Concentrate, and as a niat- \ rer of fact, .was extremely lucky to hold off Star Stranger's great final effort. With a hundred yards to go Star Stranger was galloping very strongly and fast overhauling Bright Glow, but little later lie <! bored in’’ and by the time his rider pulled him away from Bright Glow he had not sufficient; ground to make up the leeway and failed to reach her by half a head. Glare was an unlucky runner in last I Saturday’3 Wellington Cup, and if proI duced for the Consolation Handicap to-morrow, should be seriously considered. Singleton ran a good race for ten furlongs in the Wellington Cup, but then went to the rear quickly. Pride made quite a good showing to finish sixth in the recently fun Cup at Trent-ham, and c i the showing looks certain to secure some stake money

from now on. After forcing the pace from the word go. Latin Quarter ran on well enough to finish fourth in the chief handicap run at Trentham last Saturday. A win for Latin Quarter would have been well received at Invercargill. Hunting Cry with H. Gray as rider carried about twice the amount in vested on any of the other starters for the Telegraph Handicap, run at Trentham last Saturday. Gray done his part by having Hunting Cry handy to the leaders at the false rail, and a little later Hunting Cry appeared to have good "prospects when he chat longed the lender, but he stopped vory quickly and was well beaten at the finish.

Isa. showed a. lot of .speed in the Fitzherbert Handicap on "•he opening day of the Wellington Pacing Club’s meeting. She led into the course proper ; and was still one of the possibilities with a- furlong to go, but in the fun to the post her stable male, Double Bed, headed her to finish eighth. When Star Stranger came in over | the final stages of the Wellington Cup last Saturday he galloped on Bright Clow and removed some skiu from the mare’s leg. I i»i most of his races of the past Conicentrate lias drifted well back in the early stages of his races and invariably had to make up a great amount of ground over the last furlong. In last Saturday’s Wellington Cup Concentrate was always on the quarters of Amor and Latin Quarter (which pair led for about ten furlongs). Once in the straight Concentrate drew right away to win very easily. E. Eeed did not. ride Star Stranger with his usual ability last Saturday, a‘s Ihe had him many lengths from the loaders over the first mile, which was not fast. Star Stranger responded like the game gelding he is, but to expect) him to concede a great galloper and stayer like Concentrate over half a dozen lengths start in the fast run final stage .was asking an utter impossibility. Possibly, the most unlucky runner in last Saturday’s racing at Trentham was Awaken. Drawn wide out, Awaken did not appear to have any chance with a, furlong to go, but from that on she put in great work, and only failed by file shortest of heads to secure first place from Tomorden. L. J. Ellis, stating that he would ride Brjglit Glow at 7.13 in the. late Wellington Cup. was engaged for the Taranaki owned mare. When presented at the scale Ellis could not. ride lighter j than 8.2, and Trainer .1. Fryer rightly asked Ellis to stand dovn. ,T. Barry was then secured for Bright. Glow. ASHIIU.BST PROSPECTS 1 Omeo will have a strong following it. the Hack Hurdles at Ashhurst to-mor-row, but Four Aces and Aurora Borealis are sure to make matters interesting for the New Plymouth trained gelding. Tn the strong company he met at Trentham last Saturday Eidgemount failed, but he will not have such a strong lot at Ashhurst. However, Broad Acre is well just now and Veronese can also muster up a lot i&f speed, so Eidgemount will not have things all his own way. As rhp track is a small one a very fast beginner like. The Raider should also go .well. Belle Rta.r showed a lot of pace to win at New Plymouth at Christmas and a repetition *of that form in the Siberia Handicap at Ashhurst will find htr prominent at the finish. Rule Brittania. Tea Taster and Golden Shadow are three likely to give most trouble to Belle Star.

Quite a good class of performer is down to contest, the Ashhurst Cup tomorrow. If The Swell starts he can b t > relied on to figure in the finish, but Otairi and Avro are certain t,o give a <’}ood account of themselves. Whille Admiral Drake at 7.9 on this circular track may prove best of all. Green Acre ran well at Foxton last week, and as the opposition in the Komako Hack will not be strong this Taranaki owned mare should run well. Most opposition will possibly come from Brown Sugar. At 9.2 The Swell is nicely treated over the mi] ( . and 210 yards of the Raumai Handicap at Ashhurst. Thrift, and Raineses are two that have been well seasoned and will be hard to beat.
