MINING ACT BREACHES
ALLEGATIONS AT LINTON
LEGAL ACTION PENDING. (By Telegraph—Press Association./ WELLINGTON, Jan. 20As a sequel to the Royal Commission’s report on the Linton colliery disaster in Southland, it is repoited that action is to be taken against ’certain colliery officials and workmen for alleged breaches of the Mining Act in respect to safety precautions. The Minister of Mines (the Hon. W. A. Veitch) considers that the penalties for carrying matches into dangerous mines does not appear 'to be sufficiently severe, and the Royal Commission lias pointed to the necessity of not only strictly examining, men prior to their entering the mines hut also of taking power to examine any miners while in the workings. The Minister said he yroukl decide later on the advisability ‘of calling a conference of coal mine owners and worker’s representatives to consider the questions- of the proportion of stone dust in mines, as the presentlaw on the subject was not sufficiently comprehensive.
