ELTHAM CIVIC AFFAIRS

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Eltham Borough Council on Friday was attended hv the Mayor (Mr! I. J. Bridger) and Councillors J. O’Hagan, F. R. Pepperell, F. Cow a rd, AV- Picketts, A. Kemp, E. 11. Thomas. Leave of absence was granted to Ors L. Nnii-n. L. Bowo and R. Lewis. DEBAR TAIENTAI, RE PORTS The borough inspector (Mr. A. E. .Lethbridge) reported that he had made an inspection in regard to noxiouts weeds and had issued 57 notices to clear the land- The date of expiry of notice was January 15. Though the traffic which passed through the borough during the holiday season was very good on the whole, he had found it necessary to lay seven informations for breaches of the motor regulations. As some of the signs indicating the speed allowable through different parts of the borough permit eight and twelve miles per hour, he recommended a uniform speed of 15 miles to comply with the regulations. Three horses were impounded during the month. Of these two were unclaimed and were .sold bv auction.

e BOROUGH STAFF OPERATIONS. r s The overseer (Air. J. H. Williams) * reported on the work of the staff as - follows : Roads.—Patching and reconditioning l ' the surface on the Mangawhero Road l’ in readiness for top-dressing was com- - pleted. The coroner of the Mangawhero ltoad and the Mountain Road, ’ on the south side was scarified, metal- • ling and Coliix grouted. Top-dressing was applied fo the approach to Julian 1 Street. 1 Footpaths.—High Street paths on t both sides from London Street to the 1 pound corner was patched. The tarred ! path from King Edward Street to Aloir Street on the Mountain Road ■ side was patched in readiness for top--1 dressing- A start has been made with ’ the kerb and channel in Bath Street. Water and Drainage.—Several leak- . ing services and drain blockages were attended to. .All manholes and sewerage system was inspected. The strict attention to dead ends is being attended to. The usual water pressure is being maintained. General. —A general clean-up day throughout the borough was carried out during the month. A general ' clean-up was effected at the cemetery* I

with satisfactory results. The long grass on the hockey ground, used as a camping site at Taumata Park was mown. Mowing the grass off street sides is being carried out. The rails around the selling pen at the pound have been removed and a wire boundary fence was erected. A new crossing was put down in Bridge Street east. All the usual routine duties have been attended to. THE GAS DEPARTMENT. The gasworks manager (Mr A. Blackman) submitted comparative icturns in regard to manufacture, the figures for 192 S being shown in parentheses. as follow: Gas made, 477,000 feet 430.700) ; coal used, 3G tons 16ewt (33 tons 13cwt); make per ton , 12,900 feet (12.800 feet) ; sold ;bv meter, 354,700 feet (405.500). ' I Two cookers and one coke boiler j were installed. Number of consumers, < -131; number of meters read, 366. ! Sales of fittings, coke and tar during December amounted to £64 1 7s 6d. ’

5 TREASURER’S STATEMENT. $ s Receipts for December totalled £545 b 15s lOd, the chief sources being: Gas- ; works £239 os 4d, Town Hall £193 l 15s 4d, rates £6O 7is 3d, workers’ - dwellings £36 5s Id. The principal allocations in a total ' expenditure of £BIO 6s 9d were for > gasworks £165 Is 4d, Town Hall £176 8s 2d, hospital levy £55 15s 4d, Eltliam Domain and Ngaere Cemetery £l4 13s 9d. Credit bank balances were shown in various accounts as at December 31 as follow: District fund account, £968 10s lid; cemetery account. £lO9 10s 9d: domain account, £l3O 16s lid; sewerage loan account, £36 16s 7d (fixed deposit £1000); total credit, £2245 15s 2d. I GENERAL. f On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, adjustment of the j fixed deposit sewerage loan was left in the hands of the Mayor and Town 1 I Clerk. 1

An instruction was given to the Town Clerk that in cases where license fees are seven days overdue the defaulters are to he prosecuted. Accounts amounting to £847 4s Id were passed for payment. Three cases of diphtheria were notified during the month, two occurring in one household. At the municipal abattoirs 336 head of stock were slaughtered; this number comprised 39 cows, 5 bullocks, 7 heifers, 1 calf, 146 - sheep, 105 lambs and 33 pigs. One sheep was condemned. Arrangements have been made with Mr W. Newson to cut and sell grass seed growing on the Soldiers’ Memorial Parle. Camping fees at Taumata Park during December amounted to 18s.
