CHAIRMAN GRANTS ACCESS

For some time i>ast difficulty has been experienced by newspaper representatives in obtaining access to letters dealing with matters that had come before the Thames County Council (states the Thames correspondent of the "Auckland Star’’). At last Thursday's meeting of the council the chairman, (Mr H. Lowe, supported the request of a pressman for access to a letter, which the clerk had refused oil grounds that the letter was one criticising the council.

"I consider,” said the chairman, "that the Press has an absolute right to demand access t>o any letter which has been read in open council, even though it has been previously dealt with in committee, and 1 rule that wav. ’ ’
