ILLEGAL LIQUOR SALES
CONFECTIONER WHO DISAPPEARED'

A constable on three separate occasions purchased a quantity of liquor from a confectionery shop in Upper Victoria Street, Hamilton, run by Leslie George Brown. His purchases included a bottle of sherry lor 7s. 6d. and a small bottle of ale for Is. The shop was later raided, when all that wa-s found' was a number of empty bottles. A prosecution was- instituted against Brown, -since when he has sold out the business and left the tqupi, and bis whereabouts, ■ according to the police, are unknown.
Senior Sergeant- Sweeny said that Brown had purchased beer from a local brewery in an assumed name, and in less than two months- bought no- less than 72 dozen pint bottles. Accused was fined £lO on each of three charges, with an alternative of a month in each case.
