Lloyd’s register of shipping returns for the quarter ended December 31 shows -the total world tonnage under construction is 3,110,580, of which 1,500,254 is being constructed in Great Britain. The latter represents an increase of 111,599 tons compared with last September and 317,400 tons cornpaired with December, 1928. The -tonnage being constructed in Great Britain includes 101,000 for the Dominions. In Great Britain 705,912 tons in motor ships -are being constructed, and 971,922 tons are being built abroad.

That continued progress is being made in the employment of the internal combustion engine is indicated by the fact that 75 motor ships arc being built in different parts of the world, each of 8000 tons or over, compared with 28 steamers of such size. There are also under construction 15 motor ships of 15,000 tons or over, compared with six steamers,
