TEACHERS' SUMMER SCHOOL

OPENED AT NEW PLYMOUTH A WIDE SYLLABUS A most useful and valuable time is certain for the five hundred teachers from many parts of New .Zealand, who have gathered a.t New Plymouth and began the .work of the 1930 summer school to-day. They are camped at the Boys High School and an adjoining building. ° The opening ceremony is fixed to take place in the school assembly hall this afternoon, the speakers being the Mayor (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths), the Minister of Education (Hon. H. AtI more) and Air. S. G. Smi-fh, M.P., and there will be representatives of local bodies present. In addition to the list of lecturers published in Friday’s Star, .there will oe,Mr. D. M. Kae, M.A., F.K.H.S., who will b. e president of the school; Mr. W. v\. Small, authority on New Zealand natural history; Mr. P. Smythe, expert in Maori pronunciation; Miss Whistler, specialist in eurythmies; Mr. N. R. I McKenzie, a well-known authority on. education who will lecture ou native education in other lands. In the work to be done will be included lectures each evening of general interest to which the public' are invited. The president (Mr. D. M. Rae) will give the opening address on ■“the summer school movement’ s this evening. It, is hoped that one result of the .work will be an increased interest hi work among the Maoris. With this in view the Director of Education (Mr. B. Strong) will give an outline of the present policy of the Department and free discussion is invited Later a booklet will be published embodying the work of the different research groups and loading, it is hoped* ;o improvements in the methods of dealing with the native races’ in education matter all over the Dominion and its allied territories.
