BOGUS CALLS FOR HELP
WOLF CRY MODERNISED A REALISTIC TEST. PARIS, Nov. 20. Terrifying cries were heard this morning in a big tenement house in the Rue Yieille. “Murder! Murder! Help! Help!’’ was being shouted friom one of the rooms. The average inan does not like to be mixed up in other people's business —business of this sort, at any rate —and therefore there was a scurrying exodu3 from the building. The police were summoned and were told, ‘Some, one is being murdered in the Rue Veille du Temple." Four constables dashed up to the room indicated on the fourth floor, the door oi which iwas unlocked. To their amazement they found themselves in the presence of two peaceful citizens quietly engaged in conversation. They explained that arising out of a discussion of the present crime wave in which they had been engaged there emerged this question: Suppose we were being assassinated at this moment, would our cries for help be heard 1 ?" So they decided to put the matter to the test.
The dumbfounded policemen were in the situation of firemen called to an outbreak that did not exist. Unable to think of a precise charge to formulate ithey retired after making some unofficial “observations" to the offenders.
