The death of the Duke of Grafton, at the age of 79, is announced in a London cablegram. He succeeded to the dukedom in 1918. Him family comprises three daughters.

Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., and Mrs Mowlem, who have been spendinoj r holiday in New Plymouth, left for Napier on Saturday.

A London cablegram reports that the Geological Society has awarded the Lyell Medal to Mr. F. Chapman an Australian palaeontologist. Mr. and Airs. C. J. Roberts returned to Palmerston North this morning after a holiday spent in Ilawera. Air. R. A. G. Fowke and family- left IHawera by the south express this morning, on route to Auckland.

Air. 11. G. Dickie, M.P., left Ilawera for Auckland by the South express today. The Hon. H. Atmore, Minister ol Education, will arrive at New Plymouth at 2.30 pm. to-day to open the teachers’ summer school, lie advised the Mayor, Air. 11. V. S. Griifitlis

Air. Charles L. Garland, former member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, whosa death was announced in a Sydney cable last week, was a resident of New Plymouth do years ago, associated with Air. fe. Coombes, Auckland, in the conduct dt a branch drapery establishment. Viscount and Viscountess Craigavon arrived at Dunedin on Saturday morning, the Press Association reports. Lord Craigavon was entertained at a civic luncheon, and Lady . Craigavon was the guest of the Otago Women’s Club. They left for Invercargill in the afternoon. This week will be spent in a tour of the Lakes district, followed 1 bv a stay at Alount Cook. I
