Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective of fiction, smoked “black shag,” and “derived Inspiration from it when puzzling over some problem of extraordinary toughness. But shag is too strong for many smokers. It contains too much nicotine, and nicotine is a bad thing. Habitual rase of such tobacco is bound sooner or later to affect the health. Unfortunately the imported tobaccos are all 'loaded 1 with nicotine. And that’s where they differ from our New Zealand-grown varieties. These latter are all toasted. That’s why they are so pure and so comparatively free from nicotine. The toasting also accounts for their beautiful flavour and aroma. There’s no bite in them, and they may be smoked as freely as yon please with perfect safety. There are half-a-dozen brands, more or less. First favourites: Riverhead Gold is sweet and mild; Navy Cut, a choice medium; Cavendish, also medium, is the sportsman’s choice; and Cut Plug No. 10, a fine rich full-flavoured' sort. They are exclusively manufactured by the National Tobacco Co., Ltd. (pioneers of the N.Z. 'tobacco industry).*
