TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
TOURNEY AT NEW PLYMOUTH
THE OPENING DAY
Play in the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship and handicap tournament opened at Xew Plyinouth yesterday when, in the ladies ’ and men’s singles the first and second rounds were completed and a few games were played in the third, while in the doubles the first and second rounds were partly finished. Ainono- the competitors are a number of the best from Auckland, Wanganui, Wellington, Eltliam, Ila.wera, Waverley and Christchurch, these including the two Stcdmans, Melody, Charters, l ampe, Rhode-Wiliams, Wallace, Hay Campbell, Shaw, Lamb, Wills (2) Pease McCarthy, A. P.owdrell and Meuli among the men and Misses Andrews, Myers, 1). Nicbolls, Ward, Lloyd, Preedv and Airs. Melody among the ladies. The leading New Plymouth players are also competing and the latter stages of the tourney promise to by exceptionally interesting. There are in all Hoi entries, as against 3.80 last year, but the championship totals have increased, the falling off being in the handicap events mainly.
One of the surprises was the victory of Miss Joan Ward over the Sydney ( .i-nck player. Miss Lloyd, but the winner thoroughly deserved Her success. Resells were as below: —
