NEW ARAPUNI TUNNEL

SAFETY BY-PASS COMPLETED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 7. Work on the by-pass tunnel at Arapuni has been completed. Last week a most successful experimental trial was carried out, wheu a great volume of water was released through the newlylined escape. Tlie Hon. E. A. Ransom stated in an interview this morning that the engineer-! n-oluef of the Public Works Department, Mr F. AV. Furkert, reported a few days ago that the relining of the by-pass tunnel has been successfully effected,. The Minister said the progress made on tlie work at A.rapuni was most gratifying. Tho anxiety experienced a few months ago in consequence of the erosion at tlie spillway had been allayed, lb was hoped that it would never bo necessary to use the by-pass tunnel, but it was reassuring to know that this channel was available in the event of the water pressure becoming too great.
