No thoroughbred seen south of the line has had a. stouter strain of blood than’ Sandstar. His grandsire on the male sile is Rock Sand, and on the dam’s side Bright Steel. His great grandsires were Sanfoin aad Henry of Navarre (sire’s side; and St. Simon and Positano (dam's side). These are names to conjure with land columns could be written of the performances of the progeny of the great sires named. Sandstar, during his short stay on the turf, was a successful performer, also his sire, Sands of the Orient, and his grandsire, Rock Sand, who won the Derby and St. Leger and Two Thousand Guineas in England. Sandstar* broke his fetlock joint and only raced on ten occasiosn, twice as a two -year-old, being unplaced; eight times as a three-year-old, being placed on every occasion, winning live, also once second and twice third. The races he won included: Kensington Handicap. The St. Simon-Hampton blood has been, markedly successful in sires all the world over; the great Persimmon and his brothers Diamond Jubilee and FloTizel 11. are prominent representatives who all left good' turf performers and good blood mares at the stud. j Callaghan won the Birmingham Handicap, 1000 sovs, in England, and several races in New Zealand; contracted thrush on the boat coming to New Zealand, which spoilt a very promising! career.
